International Leader Trump back at the United Nations, amid ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine
Next week, the United Nations General Assembly will convene in New York, bringing together world leaders to discuss global issues and challenges. Among the notable attendees will be U.S. President Donald Trump, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and leaders from Ukraine, Iran, and Saudi Arabia.
Donald Trump is expected to deliver a speech at the General Assembly, a speech likely to be marked by boasts about his achievements and a possible case for the Nobel Peace Prize. However, his appearance comes amidst a series of decisions that have strained U.S.-U.N. relations. Trump has announced plans to quit the Paris climate deal and the World Health Organization, and has called for slashing U.S. funding for the U.N. He has also stopped U.S. engagement with the U.N. Human Rights Council, extended a halt to funding for the Palestinian relief agency UNRWA, and quit the U.N. cultural agency UNESCO.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will not be present at the U.N. General Assembly in person due to a visa denial by the U.S. Instead, he is expected to appear via video for both Monday's summit and his General Assembly speech scheduled for Thursday next week. The summit, hosted by France and Saudi Arabia, aims to build momentum toward a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians.
The humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza continues to worsen, with famine taking hold. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, wanted by the International Criminal Court over alleged war crimes in Gaza, is due to address the General Assembly.
The U.N. Security Council is expected to hold meetings on Ukraine and Gaza during the high-level General Assembly session. However, the council remains deadlocked on these conflicts due to the veto powers held by the U.S. and Russia.
Elsewhere, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will address the General Assembly. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi are also expected to be at the United Nations for last-minute diplomacy over Iran's nuclear program.
In his opening address, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that international cooperation is straining under pressures unseen in our lifetimes. The General Assembly promises to be a critical platform for world leaders to address these challenges and work towards a more peaceful and prosperous future.
