International leader criticizes Israeli actions encroaching upon Syria's territorial integrity

Friday's Slap to Syria's Sovereignty: A Global Whirlwind

In a fiery outburst, United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has slammed Israel's ongoing air raids in Syrian soil, labeling them as "a damnable affront to Syria's sovereignty," according to Anadolu's reports.

At a lively press conference, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric echoed the Secretary-General's sentiments, expressing concerns over escalating tensions in certain Damascus quarters and roundly condemning any violence against civilians and moves that fan the flames of sectarian strife.

"This particular incident—Israel's breach of Syria's sovereignty, including their latest airstrike near the presidential palace in the heart of Damascus—is downright unacceptable," Dujarric underscored.

Dujarric further highlighted Guterres' admiration for Syria's government's endeavors to suppress violence and uphold security and stability. The UN boss encouraged the authorities to launch an independent and open probe into any rights violations.

"The Secretary-General is advocating for a credible, methodical, and inclusive political transition in Syria in accordance with the fundamental principles outlined in Resolution 2254 (2015)," Dujarric added.

Israel's Burst over Damascus

In a pre-dawn strike earlier on Friday, Israel launched an aerial assault near the presidential palace in the Syrian capital, Damascus.

Israeli authorities claimed the strike served as a signal, cautioning against the presence of armed groups near southern Damascus and any potential threat to the Druze community.

The timing of the assault is deemed particularly inflammatory, occurring mere hours after key Druze community leaders publicized a video statement reinforcing their unwavering commitment to Syria's unity and rejection of any division or separatist tendencies.

Pundits suggests Israel's intention behind this strike is to capitalize on sectarian tensions, especially among Syria's Druze population, in an attempt to contrive intervention and exacerbate fragmentation within the country.

Damascus has consistently announced that all religious and ethnic groups in Syria are entitled to equal rights and representation.

Qatar Slams Israel's Assault as a 'Gross Infringement'

In a harsh republication, Qatar has denounced Israel's raid on Damascus as a "brazen infringement" of Syria's sovereignty.

Injecting fresh dynamics into the global response, states and organizations have manifested varying stances towards Israel's continued air raids on Syrian territory. The international scene reveals entrenched geopolitical tangles and contrasting interests.

On the global front, the United Nations (UN) Special Envoy for Syria, Geir O. Pedersen, has criticized Israel's airstrikes, pointing out they hinder the pursuit of a peaceful Syria and may constitute severe violations of international law. The UN Security Council is anticipated to reinforce its pledge to Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity while exhorting external actors to refrain from actions that destabilize the region.

Human Rights Organizations, notably the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), have denounced the attack as a dangerous provocation and a flagrant breach of Syria's sovereignty.

Among regional players, Syria is actively seeking backing from Arab nations and allies in international institutions to forge a coordinated stance against Israel's activities. Meanwhile, the United States has shown concerns over Syria's transitory authorities failing to distance themselves from extremist groups and has emphasized the importance of averting further destabilization.

Israel's motivations for the airstrikes, according to observers, range from safeguarding Druze communities to fragmenting Syria geographically, socially, and politically, thereby preventing the new government from regaining strength.

The global community now confronts a profound impasse, with calls for restraint and respect for sovereignty colliding with Israel's strategic pursuits in the Middle East.
