International Health Organization Leader Extends Aid after Devastating Earthquake in Turkey
On August 7, 2023, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey's western region, specifically the Balikesir province. The disaster, which occurred at a relatively shallow depth of 11 kilometers, left one person dead and 29 injured, and caused significant structural damage across 68 neighborhoods.
In the aftermath of the earthquake, the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency of Turkey reported the incident and mobilized emergency response teams. These teams are currently monitoring the situation for aftershocks. Initial assessments show that 16 structures were damaged, and judicial investigations related to building collapses are underway to determine negligence.
The Turkish government, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and regional governors, has taken swift action. Over 1,100 search and rescue personnel and 50 damage assessment teams have been deployed to affected areas, supported by specialized teams. The Turkish Red Crescent, along with NGOs and municipalities, have also contributed, deploying 25 teams to provide aid and refreshments at relief points.
Approximately TL 20 million (about $491,260) has been allocated from Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Agency for emergency expenditures. Container settlements from AFAD warehouses have been dispatched to provide temporary shelter for displaced residents until permanent housing solutions can be established.
Despite the strong and well-coordinated domestic response, there has been no substantial publicly available information about international aid involvement at this stage. However, the World Health Organization has offered assistance to Turkey, indicating ongoing international concern for Turkey's earthquake preparedness.
As the relief efforts continue, the focus remains on rescue, emergency aid, temporary housing, damage assessment, and judicial review. The resilience of the Turkish people and the swift action of their government offer hope for a swift recovery.
