International Governing Body Bans Further Engagement in World Cricket League for Unspecified Teams
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken a strong stance against the World Championship of Legends (WCL) following what it calls "blatant bias" and unsporting conduct by the tournament organizers. The PCB is particularly upset about the refusal of the India Champions team to play against the Pakistan Champions team twice during the tournament, citing political and national sentiments after the Pahalgam terror incident.
The controversy unfolded during the WCL tournament held in England in 2025. The India Champions refused to face Pakistan Champions both in the group stage and the semi-final. Points were shared in the group match, and Pakistan advanced to the final through a walkover due to India's withdrawal.
The PCB views the Indian teams' actions and how the organizers handled the situation as discriminatory and politically motivated. This dissatisfaction prompted the PCB's ban on Pakistani participation and the use of the name "Pakistan" in franchise team names without PCB sanction or branding rights.
In a virtual meeting attended by several members, including Sumair Ahmed Syed, Salman Naseer, and Zaheer Abbas, the board reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the sanctity of the sport. The PCB pledged to raise its voice at all relevant forums against politically tainted decisions in international cricket.
The PCB strongly criticized the organizers for barring Pakistani cricketers and allowing political considerations to influence the event's conduct. The board also highlighted the refusal of the Indian team to play its scheduled matches against Pakistan as a significant issue. The WCL's apology for "hurting sentiments" was termed as "farcical" by the PCB.
It's important to note that bilateral cricket between Pakistan and India has remained frozen since 2008, with a brief resumption in 2012. The only brief resumption came in 2012, when Pakistan toured India for an ODI series led by Shahid Afridi, resulting in a series win for Pakistan.
The PCB asserted that participation in such an environment would be against the dignity of Pakistani players and could pose risks for future events. The board also stated that the decision to exclude Pakistani players was not based on cricketing merit but rather a concession to a specific nationalistic narrative.
The PCB's ban on Pakistani player participation and team name use in private leagues like WCL is aimed at protecting the national image and identity of Pakistan. The board emphasized that such politically influenced decisions compromise the integrity and neutrality of international sports.
