International Gatherings of BRICS Nations

China, a vast nation in Asia with over 1.4 billion people, boasts a robust economy and is a significant global trader, selling its products to numerous countries worldwide. The country is a key member of the BRICS group, an association that initially included Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa since its inception in 2011.

The BRICS acronym stands for the five founding nations, and the group has since expanded. In January 2024, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Ethiopia joined the coalition, with Indonesia following suit in early 2025. The most recent expansion signifies the growing influence of these emerging economies on the global stage.

Recently, the BRICS meeting took place in the Russian city of Kazan. However, the gathering was not without controversy, as tensions between Russia and the European Union (EU) continued to escalate. The EU, a cooperation of 27 countries, including Germany, considers Russian President Putin a war criminal and advocates for his prosecution in relation to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which has been ongoing for over two years.

The EU finds Putin's use of the BRICS meeting as a platform to demonstrate his recognition problematic, while President Putin has publicly stated that the BRICS countries aim to establish a new world order.

In contrast to the BRICS, the EU has the unique ability to enact laws that apply uniformly across all its member states. Most EU politicians work in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, while the capital of China is Beijing, and Moscow serves as the capital of Russia.

South Africa, another BRICS member, is a diverse African nation with 11 official languages, including nine African languages, English, and Afrikaans. Brazil, located in South America, is the largest Portuguese-speaking country in the world, with the majority of its population speaking Brazilian Portuguese.

Despite these developments, the future of the BRICS and EU-Russia relations remains uncertain, with geopolitical dynamics continuing to evolve.
