International Gathering in Alaska: Zelensky, EU Leaders, Trump, and Putin - Post-Anchorage Meeting Responses Examined

The recent summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska has failed to bring about a ceasefire or major breakthrough in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Although the leaders signed a communiqué, renewed their support for Kyiv, and emphasized the importance of Ukraine obtaining "solid as iron security guarantees," peace talks are effectively stalled with no immediate prospects for a direct summit between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Zelensky expressed his willingness to meet Putin only if security guarantees were assured by Ukraine's allies, but Russia has been avoiding direct talks. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov dismissed immediate Putin-Zelensky talks as unrealistic and insisted Russia must have veto power over Ukraine's future security.

The summit did not translate to peace on the ground, as fighting escalated with major Russian attacks reported after the summit, including missile strikes and drone attacks. Both sides are preparing for further conflict, with Ukraine testing new weapons and Russia continuing military advances, particularly in Donetsk.

US Vice President JD Vance claimed that Russia made significant concessions, but this is contradicted by Russia’s hard-line position and ongoing hostilities. French President Emmanuel Macron warned against Russia's propensity to not keep its own commitments.

In a bid to push for peace, Donald Trump is campaigning for a peace agreement. To prepare the next steps of the peace talks, Emmanuel Macron, Keir Starmer, and Friedrich Merz will meet on Sunday afternoon in a videoconference with countries allied with Kyiv.
