International Film Submission for the Oscars: Colombia Selects "A Poet" as Best International Feature
In the world of international cinema, a new contender has emerged from the vibrant landscape of Colombia. The Spanish-language film "A Poet," a co-production between Colombia, Germany, and Sweden, has been making waves and capturing the hearts of audiences and critics alike.
The film, directed by Simón Mesa Soto, tells a compelling story that revolves around the lives of several characters, including Yurlady, a young and talented student, played by Rebeca Andrade. Another central character is Oscar Restrepo, a failed writer given a chance for redemption, portrayed by first-time actor Ubeimar Rios.
"A Poet" premiered at Cannes in the Un Certain Regard program and went on to win the jury prize. It has since had a theatrical release in Colombia and a North American premiere in Toronto. The film will receive a North American release via 1-2 Special.
The producer of "A Poet," Luis Miñarro, has overseen the production alongside Juan Sarmiento G., Manuel Ruiz Montealegre, and Margarita Soto, who also happens to be the director's mother and stars in the film.
The film's success has not gone unnoticed, as Colombia has officially submitted "A Poet" for the 2026 Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category. Margarita Soto, the director, expressed her gratitude, stating that knowing they will represent Colombia on the road to the Oscars is a huge honor.
As the race for the 2026 best international feature Oscar heats up, "A Poet" has been included in the first shortlist of 15 films in contention. The final nominations will be announced on Jan. 22, 2026, with the 98th Academy Awards Ceremony taking place in Los Angeles on March 15, 2026.
The film has been beautifully received by Colombian audiences, and its journey to the Oscars promises to be an exciting one. As the story of "A Poet" unfolds, it serves as a testament to the power of cinema to inspire, captivate, and unite people from all corners of the world.
