NEW YORK — United Nations leaders paid tribute to Vietnam's active role and supportive contributions across the organization's three main pillars during farewell meetings with Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, who is set to conclude his tenure as Vietnam's Permanent Representative to the UN.
Ambassador Giang made his final rounds of visits to the President of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly, Philemon Yang, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on May 21 and May 27, respectively.
In their encounter, Yang hailed Vietnam's recent socio-economic and diplomatic advancements, praising the country's commitment and contributions to the UN's peace and security, sustainable development, as well as human rights promotion. He also expressed gratitude for the commitment and support shown by the Vietnamese Mission and Ambassador Giang towards his agenda and priorities.
Guterres showcased high respect for Vietnam's growing significance within the UN, and extolled Ambassador Giang's efforts in fostering cooperation and consensus within the UN. He pointed out that Vietnam's recent initiatives had gained broad support from member states and mirrored their relevance to global issues and contributions to upholding multilateralism.
The Secretary-General expressed his aspirations to return to Vietnam, and hoped for the continued development of relations between the UN and Vietnam, with Vietnam further increasing its presence on UN forums.

In return, Giang expressed his gratitude for the support and affection extended by the Secretary-General and the General Assembly President throughout his nearly three-year tenure. He emphasized Vietnam's unwavering commitment to multilateralism, promising a continuous focus in making more substantial contributions towards maintaining international peace, promoting sustainable development, and addressing global challenges.
