International deliberation underway in United Nations Security Council as the USA encounters pressure concerning a vote pertaining to the Gaza Strip
The UN Security Council is set to vote on a new resolution calling for a ceasefire and increased humanitarian access in Gaza this Thursday. The draft resolution, initiated by the 10 non-permanent members, comes in response to the UN's official declaration of famine in Gaza, which has been under Israel's war for nearly two years.
The draft resolution demands opening access to aid, an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza respected by all parties, and the immediate and unconditional release of hostages. However, no specific information is provided about the hostages' release.
Israel's ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, has stated that Israel will continue to fight Hamas and protect its citizens, even if the Security Council prefers to turn a blind eye to terrorism. He also mentioned that the resolutions against Israel will not release the hostages or bring security to the region.
The US has already rejected the approach of the new resolution multiple times, most recently in June. France, the United Kingdom, and Russia were skeptical of the value of a purely humanitarian resolution from a body tasked with maintaining world peace, as the US could still veto it. Despite this, the members of the council are increasingly vocal in their frustration over their apparent inability to pressure Israel to stop the suffering of Gaza's inhabitants.
An earlier draft primarily demanded lifting barriers to aid, but was met with skepticism by some diplomatic sources. The latest attempt is a refusal to submit to the threat of a US veto, according to a European diplomat. The diplomat stated that not trying makes it too easy for the US, as they don't have to justify their actions and confront the other members of the council and the world public.
The UN-mandated international investigative commission has accused Israel of committing "genocide" in Gaza since October 2023 with the intent to "destroy" the Palestinians. The issue of Gaza is expected to be central to next week's annual UN summit in New York.
Meanwhile, a current telecoms blackout in Gaza persists as Israeli tanks advance, adding to the hardships faced by the people of Gaza. The diplomat also mentioned that the efforts, despite not helping much on the ground, at least keep showing that they are trying.
The draft resolution was reviewed by AFP, and the vote on Thursday promises to be a significant moment in the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
