The Darts World Championship 2026 is all set for a grand return to London's iconic Alexandra Palace, popularly known as Ally Pally. With a slight twist, the tournament is moving to an extended format, featuring an impressive 128 participants. Details about the new expanded format are yet to be officially announced by the PDC, but they have confirmed that the tournament will commence in December and conclude in January, just like in previous years.
Back in April, PDC CEO Matthew Porter gave a glimpse about the possible venue in an interview. He stated, "I know where the World Championship will be played. We will announce it soon." Although an official announcement hasn't been made yet, the West Hall, which houses approximately 3,500 seats, remains the likely venue. Despite ongoing speculations about a move to foreign lands like Saudi Arabia, these rumors have not been substantiated as yet.
Sky's the Limit: Darts Dreaming Big with Doubled Prize Money
The PDC has not only increased the participant count but has also doubled the prize money for the winner. From the previous £500,000, the winner of the most prestigious darts tournament in the world will now receive a whopping £1,000,000 (approximately €1.2 million) in 2026. According to Porter, "The prize money reflects the status of darts as one of the most thrilling and sought-after sports in the world."
With the increased prize money, the reigning champion Luke Littler and all other top players will be compelled to compete in the initial round. Inspired by the format of a Grand Slam tournament in tennis, the expanded World Championship will continue to be played only in a knockout format.
The expanded format for the tournament will lead to 32 additional games and eight extra sessions, generating more revenue at the Alexandra Palace. It is expected that the championship could kick off four days earlier, starting from December 11 instead of the current December 15.
