ICC Clears Ireland Spinner Aimee Maguire to Resume Bowling in International Cricket

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that Ireland spinner Aimee Maguire's bowling action has been found to be legal, following an independent reassessment at an ICC-accredited testing center. This decision comes after Maguire was suspended from bowling in international matches following a report of a suspect bowling action during the first ODI of the ICC Women's Championship series against India in Rajkot on January 10, 2025.

The process of assessing a bowler's action involves a temporary suspension from bowling in international fixtures until the action is reassessed and approved by the ICC. Maguire, who has 20 caps for Ireland and has taken 25 wickets across formats in her international career, which started in 2023, underwent biomechanical analysis at an ICC-approved testing center to measure elbow extension during delivery. The independent assessment concluded that the amount of elbow extension was within the 15-degree level of tolerance permitted under the ICC Illegal Bowling Regulations.

The ICC's process includes an initial on-field report and temporary suspension, followed by action reassessment and clearance or further suspension. In Maguire's case, after remodeling her bowling action, she passed the independent testing, leading to the ICC lifting her suspension and permitting her to resume bowling in international cricket.

This procedure is part of the ICC's broader framework for maintaining legal bowling actions to ensure fairness and safety in international cricket. Unlike disciplinary actions for dangerous deliveries like beamers—which may result in immediate or progressive match bans—illegal action suspensions focus on biomechanical legality and rehabilitation.

Despite the good news, Maguire will not be part of Ireland's squad for the upcoming three-match T20 series against Pakistan, which begins in Dublin on Wednesday. The focus now shifts to Maguire's return to the international stage, where she will undoubtedly be a valuable asset to the Irish team.

Aimee Maguire, the Ireland spinner, will now be able to bowl in international cricket following the ICC's decision to clear her of any illegal bowling action concerns. With her suspension lifted, Maguire's return to the international stage is imminent, adding yet another skilled player to the Irish team in upcoming fixtures.
