International cricket player Jofra Archer withdraws from the ODI series against West Indies because of an injury.
England Announce Squad for ODI and T20 Series Against West Indies
Jofra Archer's absence due to a right thumb injury will be a notable miss as England prepare for their upcoming one-day international (ODI) series against the West Indies. The series, which begins on May 29 at Edgbaston, will see Harry Brook take over as England's new white-ball captain.
In Archer's stead, Lancashire's left-arm seamer Luke Wood has been called up to the ODI squad. England's medical team will reassess Archer over the next fortnight to determine when he may return to action.
The ODI series will consist of three matches, with the first game taking place on May 29 at Edgbaston (d/n) with a start time of 13:00 BST. The second and third ODIs will be played on June 1 at Cardiff and June 3 at The Kia Oval (d/n), respectively, with start times of 11:00 BST and 13:00 BST, respectively.
The squad for the ODI series includes Gus Atkinson, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Jos Buttler, Brydon Carse, Ben Duckett, Tom Hartley, Will Jacks, Saqib Mahmood, Jamie Overton, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, and Luke Wood.
For the T20 series, Rehan Ahmed, Liam Dawson, Phil Salt, and Luke Wood have been added to the squad. The first T20 international will be played on June 6 at Seat Unique Riverside, Chester-le-Street (d/n), with a start time of 18:30 BST. The second and third T20 internationals will be played on June 8 at Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol, and June 10 at Utilita Bowl, Southampton, respectively, with start times of 14:30 BST and 18:30 BST, respectively.
The T20 series will also consist of three matches, with the first game taking place on June 6 at Seat Unique Riverside, Chester-le-Street (d/n). The second and third T20 internationals will be played on June 8 at Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol, and June 10 at Utilita Bowl, Southampton, respectively.
The series could have ramifications for England's prospects for qualification for the 2027 World Cup, with England and the West Indies currently positioned eighth and ninth, respectively, in the official world rankings for the 2027 World Cup qualification.
Archer's injury occurred while he was participating in the Indian Premier League with the Rajasthan Royals. Since his last Test appearance for England in February 2021, Archer has been dealing with ongoing issues related to his back and elbow.
This series will be an opportunity for the new ODI and T20 squads to show their potential and to secure crucial points towards England's qualification for the 2027 World Cup. The upcoming series against the West Indies promises to be an exciting and closely contested one.
