The Syrian Civil War, one of the most devastating conflicts of our time, came to an end in December 2024 when Islamist opposition forces led by the rebel alliance Haiat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) toppled the Assad regime.

This six-year-long conflict involved intense fighting between Sunni rebel factions and the Alawite-dominated government forces. The war started with protests in Daraa in the spring of 2011 and quickly escalated into a full-blown civil war.

The war took a heavy toll on the Syrian people. Over 500,000 people lost their lives, millions were injured, and millions more were displaced. The conflict also exacerbated existing sectarian and ethnic tensions, making the task of democratizing the state a daunting challenge for the new rulers.

The new transitional president of Syria is Ahmed al-Sharaa, a figure with a jihadist past. Despite his controversial background, al-Sharaa has been actively involved in peace negotiations, including security talks with Israel aimed at stabilizing the region and rebuilding Syria.

It is worth noting that the opposition forces were not united. Some Sunni rebel factions were hostile to each other, adding another layer of complexity to the conflict.

The Syrian Civil War is considered one of the most devastating conflicts of modern times due to the high number of casualties and displaced people. The road to recovery will be long and arduous, but with the right leadership and international support, there is hope for a better future for the Syrian people.
