International Consensus: 10 Nations to Deploy Militaries in Ukraine
European Countries Discuss Potential Military Deployment to Ukraine
European leaders, including the UK and France, are considering the deployment of troops to Ukraine as part of a potential peace settlement. This plan, met with some skepticism among other European countries, has gained support from around 10 countries prepared to send military contingents to Ukraine.
French President Emmanuel Macron and British Defence Secretary John Healey have confirmed their countries' commitment to contribute troops, mainly in non-combat roles such as securing air and sea defenses, training Ukrainian forces, and maintaining a presence in non-hot zones away from the front lines. The UK has explicitly stated its readiness to place troops on the ground to help reassure Ukrainians.
This troop deployment is being discussed as part of broader "security guarantees" to Ukraine ahead of potential peace talks between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The initiative has been supported by the US, under former President Donald Trump's backing, to strengthen Kyiv's position before negotiations.
However, there is notable skepticism or outright refusal by some European countries, such as Hungary, which has explicitly ruled out deploying troops or providing military aid to Ukraine. The overall European consensus remains divided, with some countries hesitant to commit troops on the ground despite growing discussions among others.
NATO military chiefs and defense ministers are scheduled to hold meetings in the coming days to develop security guarantees and deploy deterrent forces. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has confirmed the support of Canada, Japan, Turkey, New Zealand, and several European countries for Ukraine.
In the initial phase of support, assistance to the Ukrainian military in training and reinforcement is planned. France and the UK are prepared to send hundreds of soldiers, keeping them away from the contact line. The potential deployment could be part of a peace settlement, with the US reportedly providing air protection for Ukraine as part of security guarantees but not deploying American troops.
