International Connections of the EU with Other Countries

The 27 Foreign Ministers of the European Union (EU) are meeting today in Brussels, invited by Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. This gathering is a follow-up to an informal meeting held in Brest, France on January 13 and 14.

The focus of today's meeting is the security situation in Eastern Europe. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, in her first Brussels meeting, emphasized the importance of maintaining close ties with her colleagues. She stated that the EU is ready for a serious dialogue about mutual agreements and steps that would bring more security to all of Europe.

In the midst of the ongoing conflict in Syria, more than 13 million people are relying on humanitarian aid. The EU supports the work of the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir O. Pedersen, who will discuss the situation in Syria with the EU Foreign Ministers today. Germany welcomes the work of the UN in Libya, aiming for a political process led by Libyans and in their own interest, leading to free, fair, and inclusive elections. The originally scheduled parliamentary and presidential elections for December 24, 2021, in Libya have been postponed. The EU Foreign Ministers will discuss the EU's support for the democratic process in Libya.

Germany and the EU are committed to a lasting and just peace and a political process in Syria. The EU Foreign Ministers plan to discuss other current issues, including the situations in Mali and Sudan. However, there are no search results providing information on the date or participants of the next hearing about the situation in Mali.

An exchange on the EU's engagement in the Indo-Pacific region is also planned. The EU's red lines regarding the Assad regime remain: no normalization, no lifting of sanctions, and no reconstruction support until the regime credibly engages in UN-led efforts to resolve the conflict. A video conference with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is scheduled, potentially offering an opportunity to discuss the EU's Indo-Pacific strategy and its implementation.

During her recent visits to Kyiv and Moscow, Baerbock advocated for diplomatic solutions and further talks to ease tensions. Baerbock, in Brussels, will discuss with her EU partners the next steps and the path to de-escalation.

The EU ministers will undoubtedly grapple with these complex issues, seeking solutions that promote peace, democracy, and stability around the globe. Their discussions today mark an important step in the EU's ongoing efforts to address global challenges and maintain regional security.
