International Confrontation: Israel-Palestine Dispute
Israel's Security Cabinet has approved a controversial military plan to seize Gaza City, the largest city in the Gaza Strip, aiming to establish control with a civilian administration not run by Hamas or the Palestinian Authority [1][3]. This decision has sparked widespread condemnation from various international bodies, including the United Nations, Arab nations, and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
The plan, which potentially displaces nearly one million Palestinians, has been criticised as a dangerous escalation and a blatant violation of international law aimed at further entrenching occupation [1]. The UN Security Council has scheduled a meeting to discuss the issue on Sunday, expressing concerns over severe humanitarian consequences, such as starvation, civilian casualties, and particularly concerning increases in child deaths [2].
CARICOM, in a strong statement, condemned Israel’s seizure plan, describing it as risking prolonged conflict, worsening the humanitarian crisis, and potentially leading to famine, severe malnutrition, displacement, and deaths of millions of Palestinians. CARICOM also raised serious concerns over targeted killings of journalists and restrictions on independent media access, both of which hinder verification of the situation and violate international humanitarian law [4].
While the international community has not formally labelled the situation as genocide, the severe condemnations regarding violations of international law, targeting of civilians including journalists, and the description of the humanitarian catastrophe indicate a very grave crisis widely viewed as disproportionate and destructive by the global community [1][4].
The Palestinian foreign affairs minister, Aghabekian Shahin, has called on the international community to take action against Israel's actions in Gaza, which they have described as genocide. In an interview with Al Jazeera, the minister emphasised the importance of the international community shouldering its responsibility to stop the impunity with which Israel is moving [5].
Israel, however, has pledged to push ahead with its plans despite growing criticism, stating that it wants to "free Gaza from Hamas". The United States, Israel's top global ally, has not commented directly on the plan to seize Gaza City [6].
Aghabekian Shahin, the Palestinian foreign affairs minister, has also condemned recent remarks from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the future governance of Gaza, stating that it's up to Palestinians to decide who should govern them, and that the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) currently holds the legal and political authority on Gaza [7].
The minister has expressed that if Gaza wants to come back under the control of the Palestinian Authority, it must be governed by the PLO. Aghabekian Shahin stated that the times are very dangerous now, and the international community must take action [8].
Palestinians have rejected the Israeli push to force them out of Gaza City. The international community's inaction, according to the minister, has emboldened Israel and settlers to continue their actions for the past six decades [9].
