International Conflict: Israel-Palestine
In the midst of a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the Palestinian foreign affairs minister, Aghabekian Shahin, has called on the international community to take action against Israel's actions, which he referred to as genocide.
Shahin warned that the times are dangerous, and it is the responsibility of the international community to stop the impunity with which Israel operates. He emphasized that a Palestinian state must be established for peace to be achieved in Israel-Palestine and the region.
The minister believes that Gaza should come under the control and governance of the Palestinian Authority, the PLO, if it is to return to the "core" of the Palestinian land. He stated that the PLO currently holds the legal and political authority on Gaza.
Israel, however, has pledged to push ahead with its plans to seize Gaza City militarily, despite growing criticism. The Israeli security cabinet approved these plans, which would forcibly displace nearly one million Palestinians. The United States President, Donald Trump, has suggested that he would not block an Israeli push to take over all of Gaza.
The United Nations Security Council is holding an emergency session on Sunday to discuss the situation in the Gaza Strip. Human rights groups and the UN have warned that the plan to seize Gaza City will worsen the humanitarian crisis and lead to further mass casualties.
The situation in Gaza, as of August 2025, involves widespread allegations of genocide by Israel against the Palestinian population. Over 60,000 deaths have been reported by Gaza’s Health Ministry, mostly civilians including a high proportion of women and children. The death rate and scale of civilian harm are among the highest in recent global conflicts, with Gaza suffering extreme shortages of food, water, medical supplies, and electricity.
Regarding the international community's response, UN human rights experts have condemned attacks, including the deliberate killing of journalists covering Gaza, calling these attempts to silence reporting on the alleged genocide and starvation campaign. The killing of Al Jazeera correspondents occurred amid Israeli plans to seize Gaza City, highlighting concerns about media suppression during this military operation.
Shahin criticized recent remarks from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the future governance of Gaza, stating that it is up to Palestinians to decide who should govern them. Palestinians have rejected the Israeli push to force them out of Gaza City.
The international community, including the UN, is vocally condemning these actions, especially the targeting of journalists and civilians. However, effective measures to halt the violence or occupation at this point appear limited.
