In a show of solidarity, foreign ministers from various countries gathered for a preparatory summit before the meeting of monarchs, heads of state, and governments. The extraordinary summit, held in Qatar, was a response to Israel's recent military operations in the Gaza Strip, which have been met with international criticism.

Israel faces accusations of war crimes and even genocide for its actions in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, defended the attacks, stating that they sent a clear message: 'You can hide, you can run, but we will catch you,' referring to leading Hamas members.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), with 57 member states that have a Muslim majority, expressed 'absolute solidarity' with Qatar and condemned any attempts to justify the aggression. The Arab League, along with the OIC, is calling for an arms embargo against Israel following its attack on Hamas leadership in Qatar.

The Gulf States view the attack on Qatar as an attack on all, implying a united front against Israeli actions. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which includes Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Kuwait, issued a separate statement condemning the Israeli attack on Qatar as a 'dangerous violation of international law.'

The GCC also announced an emergency meeting of the joint defense council in Doha to assess the defense readiness of member states and potential threats in the context of the Israeli attack on Qatar. The countries belonging to the GCC that met at the Syrian OIC summit also condemned the Israeli attack.

Qatar's Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani wrote that the decisions from the summit should help strengthen joint efforts, align the positions of member states better, and present a united front. The countries of the OIC should coordinate their voices within the United Nations to suspend Israel's UN membership, as the aggressive actions of Israel, including genocide, ethnic cleansing, blockade, settlement activities, and expansion, undermine any chance of peace in the region.

The Gaza war was triggered by a Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, resulting in around 1,200 deaths in Israel and more than 250 kidnappings in the Gaza Strip, including children. Despite Qatar's efforts, along with the US and Egypt, to mediate between Israel and Hamas, talks on a ceasefire and the release of the hostages held in Gaza have been stagnant for months. The attack on Hamas leadership in Doha, according to Hamas, failed, with no member of the negotiating team reportedly killed, but six people were reportedly killed. There are still 48 hostages in Gaza, with 20 still alive, according to Israeli information.

The summit sent a 'clear signal against Israeli state terrorism' in the region, marking a significant move towards international pressure on Israel to cease its aggressive actions and work towards peace in the region.
