International Condemnation of Attack on Qatar: India Urges Preservation of Sovereignty at the United Nations Human Rights Council
India has strongly condemned the recent attacks on Qatar, expressing deep concern about their impact on the security situation in the region. The Indian Permanent Representative at the UN Human Rights Council, Arindam Bagchi, made this statement in Geneva on Tuesday.
The attacks in question were carried out by Israel in September 2021, targeting Hamas leaders in the Qatari capital as part of a precision strike against the Hamas leadership responsible for military operations. The leaders of an emergency Arab-Islamic summit, which Qatar hosted on September 15, valued Qatar's role in regional mediation efforts and emphasized that the attack on Qatari territory was a serious escalation and a desperate Israeli attempt to undermine Qatari diplomatic efforts for peace.
The OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) summit, which took place following Israel's strike on Doha, highlighted Qatar's vital role in mediation efforts in the region. The OIC stated that Israel's attack on Qatar was an attempt to interfere with Qatar's efforts to halt the war in Gaza. The summit stressed that the attack on Qatari territory represented a serious escalation.
India's statement at the UNHRC expressed concern over the violation of Qatar's sovereignty and reiterated its position on the Israeli strike on Qatar. The statement emphasized that such actions threaten peace, stability, and security not only in the region but across the world. India supports resolution of issues through dialogue and diplomacy, and avoiding escalation.
Youssef Al-Dobeay, Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs of the OIC, made a similar statement after the conference. The OIC summit did not name Israel explicitly, but the leaders of the Arab-Islamic summit valued Qatar's role in regional mediation efforts and emphasized that the attack on Qatari territory was a serious escalation and a desperate Israeli attempt to undermine Qatari diplomatic efforts for peace.
This stance by India comes days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Qatar's ruler, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, to express India's condemnation of the attack. India's position underscores its commitment to upholding international law and respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations.
