Los Angeles Prepares for Third Olympic Games as Kazakhstan Eyes Weightlifting Qualifying Tournament

The city of Los Angeles is gearing up for its third Olympic Games, having previously hosted the event in 1932 and 1984. The LA28 Games, scheduled for 2028, will span 800 events across more than 40 disciplines, showcasing over 3,000 hours of live sports. The Games are expected to welcome 15,000 athletes competing in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In a significant development, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) President Mohammed Hasan Jalood has indicated that Kazakhstan is a likely candidate to host the licensing qualifying tournament in weightlifting for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. This potential tournament is yet to reveal specific details such as the date or location.

The discussion about the potential tournament took place on Jan. 17 in Astana, Kazakhstan, between President Jalood, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and Mohamed Yousef Al Mana, President of the Asian Weightlifting Federation (AWF). President Tokayev, who considers weightlifting to be of paramount importance for Kazakhstan, thanked the officials for their contribution to strengthening cooperation and the development of weightlifting in Kazakhstan.

Mohamed Yousef Al Mana acknowledged the high level of the Kazakh school of weightlifting and suggested that Astana and Almaty, cities in Kazakhstan, have the potential to create a regional weightlifting hub for Central Asian countries. This suggestion aligns with the Kazakh athletes' top performance at the World Weightlifting Championships held in Bahrain in December.

However, as of the current date, no official selection of Kazakhstan as a host for the weightlifting qualifying tournament for the 2028 Olympics has been reported. The search results primarily focus on the venues and arrangements in and around Los Angeles for the 2028 Olympics, with no mention of Kazakhstan hosting any qualifying events.

The LA28 Games will mark Los Angeles' return as an Olympic host, and with the potential involvement of Kazakhstan in the weightlifting qualifying tournament, the event is set to be a significant milestone in the history of both cities. More updates on this potential development are expected in the coming months.

In the anticipation for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, there are plans for Kazakhstan to host the licensing qualifying tournament in weightlifting. Despite no official announcement, the city of Astana or Almaty in Kazakhstan could potentially create a regional weightlifting hub, given the high-performance level of Kazakh athletes in the sport.
