The United Nations (UN) human rights office has raised concerns about Israel's plan to take control of Gaza City, highlighting the enormous risks it poses for the city's civilians.

Thameen Al-Kheetan, a spokesperson for the UN human rights office, has accused Israel of moving Palestinians to areas where strikes continue. This could lead to mass displacement and further trauma for approximately one million Palestinians living in Gaza City.

Israel's plan may result in mass suffering and loss of life, exacerbating the existing humanitarian disaster. The total military control, combined with land, air, and naval blockade, would solidify Israel’s occupation and deepen persecution of the Palestinian population.

The risk of famine is ubiquitous throughout the Gaza Strip. Al-Mawasi, still under bombardment, has little or no access to essential services and goods, including food, water, electricity, and tents. Hundreds of thousands of people have been called to move south, to Al-Mawasi, but they have no access to tents due to a ban that has been in effect for about five months. Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Geneva, suggested that Israel may be classifying tents as "dual-use" items, implying that tent pegs could have potential military use.

The UN has condemned Israel for deliberately hindering aid to Palestinians in Gaza by imposing a blockade and restricting essential humanitarian assistance such as food, water, and medical supplies. This has caused severe starvation, dehydration, and widespread suffering among Gaza’s civilian population, including children. The denial of humanitarian aid has been described as a serious violation of international law and a crime against humanity.

International human rights organizations and legal experts warn that these actions risk violating international humanitarian law by forcibly transferring populations and intentionally inflicting conditions that cause starvation and death. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Geneva has condemned the ban on tents entering the Gaza Strip, which has forced over 700,000 people in the Palestinian enclave to frequently change locations.

In summary, the UN and many international bodies condemn Israel for deliberately restricting humanitarian aid in Gaza, causing catastrophic civilian suffering, and warn that Israel’s plan to seize Gaza City poses immense humanitarian and legal risks related to forced displacement, further civilian harm, and potential war crimes. New killings are a risk under Israel's plan for taking control of the city of Gaza, and greater misery is expected for the already suffering population.
