International Committee Discusses Escalation of Conflict in Ukraine

Ukraine War, June 2025 UNSC Meeting:

The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on the Ukraine war at 9 PM EST, gathered by Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha. Sybiha cited "Russia's latest wave of terror and brutal attacks on Ukraine", resulting in at least 28 dead and over 140 wounded in a massive air strike on Kyiv. He demanded escalated pressure against the aggressor, calling for additional air defense capabilities to protect Ukraine.

In a surprising move, Russia also handed over bodies of its own soldiers killed in the war, intentionally causing chaos to hinder identification, as claimed by Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko on Telegram. This action was branded as boundless cynicism, with Russia utilizing returned remains as a tool for manipulation and pressure.

US President Trump left the G7 summit early, reportedly due to disagreements with French President Macron and lack of interest in meeting Ukrainian President Zelenskyy. The Financial Times indicated that Trump was also upset by Macron's visit to Greenland before the G7 summit, as he threatened to take control of the Danish territory.

Latvia banned Russian and Belarusian citizens from buying real estate, citing security concerns. Indirect acquisition of properties served as a means of Russian hybrid warfare, with Moscow employing the presence of citizens within Ukraine as a pretext for attacks.

A potential deepening of military cooperation between Russia and North Korea was hinted at by news reports, with Pyongyang considering sending up to 25,000 workers to a drone factory in Russia. The workers would boost production in exchange for training in operating drones, while the factory is operated in a special economic zone of Alabuga.

Spain blocked NATO plans to increase defense spending to five percent of GDP by 2032, calling it "incompatible with our social model and worldview". Denmark, on the other hand, expressed intentions to advance Ukraine's EU accession during its EU Council presidency, which begins July 1.

Finland moved to leave the Ottawa Convention on the prohibition of anti-personnel mines, citing increased security threats from its eastern neighbor, Russia. This marks the fourth Baltic NATO country to leave the convention in recent months.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte announced plans to streamline NATO, abolishing two departments and cutting dozens of jobs at the Brussels headquarters. meanwhile, Argentina exposed a Russian intelligence operation aimed at spreading pro-Kremlin disinformation and influencing public opinion within the country.
