International coalition of ten nations, including France, poised to grant official recognition of Palestinian statehood, ahead of significant United Nations conference.
France is set to formally recognize Palestinian statehood on Monday, joining a growing number of nations in supporting a two-state solution for the long-standing conflict in the region. The French-led UN declaration, adopted in July by 17 countries, includes a proposal for a temporary international stabilization mission upon invitation of the Palestinian Authority and under the guidance of the UN. This mission aims to secure, rebuild, and ensure the future of the Gaza Strip. France is working in close cooperation with Tony Blair on plans for Gaza. Contrary to previous reports, the Blair plan does not involve the removal of Gaza's entire population. Instead, it aims to establish a transitional power in the strip. The Blair plan also does not specify the countries involved in the temporary international stabilization mission, only that it would be under the guidance of the UN. France has expressed concern over Israel's latest military operations, including a new offensive on Gaza city and a strike on Doha. Qatar, which has played a mediator role in the conflict, has taken risks and given a lot to help free the hostages, according to an adviser to French President Emmanuel Macron. France is grateful for their efforts and wants to continue working with them. Israel has threatened to annex parts of the occupied West Bank and legalize Israeli settlements in retaliation for France recognizing Palestine. In response, Macron has stated that Israel's potential annexation is a 'red line' and a 'violation of international law.' He is open to imposing economic sanctions on Israel due to their military operations. Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is scheduled to give a speech by video conference at the UN conference. Leaders from Canada, Australia, Malta, and Portugal are also expected to be present at the event. In addition to France, several other states, including Belgium, Luxembourg, and Portugal, are expected to officially recognize Palestine at the UN conference on Monday. Nearly 150 governments worldwide recognize Palestine as a state, with more western and influential nations likely joining this event. France hopes that collective recognition of Palestine will force Israel into accepting a peace deal in Gaza and pave the way for greater stability in the region. The UK is expected to make a separate statement on Sunday night or Monday.
