International body acknowledges Trump's endeavor in fostering accord between Armenia and Azerbaijan; a significant step toward normalization of their relations.

In a remarkable turn of events, Armenia and Azerbaijan have jointly nominated former US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize[1][3]. The historic peace deal, brokered between the two countries at the White House in early August 2025, marks the end of decades of conflict in the South Caucasus[2].

Both leaders—Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev—publicly credited Trump’s mediation for ending the conflict and urged the Nobel Committee to recognise his efforts[1][3][5]. The peace agreement commits both nations to stop fighting permanently, open commerce and travel, and respect each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity[1][3].

A significant aspect of the deal is the launch of a transit corridor named the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP). This 43-kilometer-long route connects Azerbaijan with its enclave of Nakhichevan through Armenian territory, allowing commercial traffic without obstacles[6].

The agreement was signed by the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, and the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, along with Trump[2]. The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, recognised the effort of President Trump in facilitating the agreement[3]. The Secretary-General also applauded the commitment of President Aliyev and Prime Minister Pashinyan to sustained dialogue and the building of trust[7].

The international organisation considers the agreement an important milestone in the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan[8]. Both leaders have expressed support for nominating President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize[1][3][5]. As of mid-August 2025, the joint petition to nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize is formally in place, endorsed by both Armenia and Azerbaijan. Additional endorsements from other countries, like Cambodia, have also been reported[3].

For Trump’s nomination to be officially awarded, further consideration by the Nobel Committee is required. Some notes mention that the nomination process may await similar support from other key regional actors, such as Russia's President Vladimir Putin[5].
