Omsk, Russia - The Omsk region is actively building international cooperation, with a recent visit to Kazakhstan marking a significant step in strengthening ties with its eastern neighbour and China.

During the visit, B2B meetings proved to be more effective and practical, as industrial cooperation was discussed. Particular focus was given to finding opportunities for joint productions, especially in areas where there is complementarity, such as machine building, agricultural product processing, and building materials.

Personal meetings between representatives of the Omsk region's government, business, and expert community with their foreign counterparts were invaluable for building trust, clarifying mutual interests, and finding common ground. This lays the foundation for future specific deals and projects.

The 'Made in China' and 'Cooperation Without Borders' forums, which took place in Omsk before the visit to Kazakhstan, are a logical extension of the search for partners to address economic and investment tasks. For Omsk, the potential cooperation includes creating a reliable and profitable route for exporting Omsk products to Kazakhstan and Asian countries.

A visit by an Omsk region delegation to China via the Irtysh River is planned for October of this year. The delegation will embark on an expedition down the Irtych River to China, visiting the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region.

In July, a delegation from Omsk Oblast visited several provinces in Kazakhstan to study the potential of the transboundary Irtych River for cargo transportation. The visit included Omsk Oblast Governor Vitaliy Khotchenko, members of the regional government, and business representatives.

The Omsk region identified numerous potential areas of cooperation with three regions of Northern Kazakhstan, primarily focusing on supplies of Kazakh products to Omsk and further across Russia. The governors of the Kazakh provinces have broader capabilities for informing their enterprises about the upcoming visit of the Omsk delegation.

The city of Omsk itself hosted the international forum "Cooperation Without Borders" in mid-July, where a B2B fair was organized for entrepreneurs, and the investment potential of Omsk Oblast was presented in the Kazakh provinces. The organization of formal events during the visit to Kazakhstan lays a solid foundation for future cooperation.

Omsk positions itself as a transport and logistics hub and industrial center, open to cooperation with eastern and southern neighbours. The international activity of the Omsk region is beneficial for positioning the region, sending a clear signal to the international community: 'Omsk region is open for business, investments, and joint projects.'

This environment creates favorable conditions for local Omsk businesses to expand through enhanced international cooperation with Kazakhstan and China, leveraging strategic partnerships and regional trade initiatives.

The strong and dynamic cooperation between Russia and Kazakhstan, with Russia being the leading foreign trade partner and largest investor in Kazakhstan's economy, further reinforces the potential benefits for Omsk. The upcoming 21st Russia-Kazakhstan Interregional Cooperation Forum in Uralsk signifies a continued deepening of regional ties that could have positive spillover effects for regions like Omsk Oblast.

While specific details on Omsk's local business ties to China were not found, given Russia's broader strategic interest in enhancing ties with China across investment, infrastructure, and technology sectors, it is reasonable to infer that Omsk Oblast participates in this national-level engagement framework. This would impact local businesses by potentially opening channels for Chinese investment, joint ventures, and technology transfer, especially relevant due to Omsk’s industrial and logistical capacities.

The Omsk region's active engagement at the federal level and openness to international cultural and educational exchanges, as indicated by the region's involvement in international youth cultural exchange programs, creates a conducive environment for cross-border business relationships. This, combined with the robust ties between Russia and Kazakhstan, positions Omsk well for future economic growth through international cooperation.

  1. I'm not sure about the specifics of Omsk's local sports ties with China, but given Russia's broader strategic interest in enhancing ties with China across various sectors, it is possible that sporting partnerships may develop in the future.
  2. With a focus on industrial cooperation, agricultural product processing, and building materials, sports could potentially emerge as an area of joint production between the Omsk region and its Eastern and Asian partners, given the emphasis on complementarity and mutual interests in boosting economic growth.
