International advisor Wadephul issues a caution to Israel over potential global seclusion
In a recent visit to Israel, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized the urgent need for immediate and comprehensive humanitarian relief in Gaza, while also expressing concern over Israel's potential annexation of the West Bank.
During his political talks in Jerusalem with Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and President Izchak Herzog, Wadephul urged Israel to take durable measures to alleviate the suffering in Gaza. He advocated for increased and safe humanitarian aid delivery, particularly via land routes rather than air-drops.
Wadephul warned that Israel risks becoming increasingly isolated internationally due to its policies, including annexation plans and the handling of Gaza. He viewed preventing Israel's isolation as a key German duty and called on the Israeli government to clarify it will not pursue annexation or expulsion policies.
Regarding the ceasefire prospects, Wadephul primarily directed his demand at the terrorist organization Hamas, urging it to release hostages and end hostilities. He acknowledged Hamas's unwillingness to capitulate or end the war, and called for all parties that have contact with Hamas to help clear the way for ceasefire negotiations.
Wadephul also highlighted Germany’s "never-ending historical obligation" to Israel, while simultaneously deploring the "disastrous situation in Gaza" and the humanitarian crisis worsening there. He stressed the need for a fundamental improvement for the people in the Gaza Strip.
The Middle East peace process and the entire region are at a crossroads, according to Wadephul. He pointed out that there is a growing willingness of states to recognize a Palestinian state, and discussions in the European Union are ongoing about potential sanctions against Israel.
Tomorrow, Wadephul plans to travel to the West Bank and meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah. Discussions with Abbas are expected to cover increasing violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians.
Wadephul's position is a nuanced diplomatic balancing act: steadfast support for Israel’s security and rejection of Hamas’s actions, strong concern and calls for alleviating Gaza’s humanitarian disaster, opposition to unilateral Israeli annexation moves, and a commitment to a negotiated two-state outcome as the path forward.
