Internal staff at NDR voiced their dissatisfaction with the structure of the company communication memo.

In an internal letter, NDR employees have expressed their concerns over the pilot episode of the "Klarna" format, stating that it did not adhere to a series of journalistic principles and the public broadcasting mandate outlined in the NDR state treaty. The focus of the format, according to NDR program director Frank Beckmann, should be on the topics rather than the moderator. In a recent development, Julia Ruhs will no longer moderate the "Klarna" format at NDR, but will continue to do so at Bayerischer Rundfunk. The criticism from the employees revolves around Julia Ruhs' reporting on violence in connection with immigration in the first episode of the "Klarna" format. They have also called for an investigation into the decisions that led to the broadcast of the controversial film. The NDR has chosen not to comment further on the letter or the employees' concerns. However, it is worth noting that the internal letter states that political decision-makers were not confronted with the criticism, which is considered another violation of journalistic standards. CDU politician Carsten Linnemann has demanded financial consequences for ARD following Julia Ruhs' departure from NDR. Meanwhile, the NDR and BR have announced plans to continue the "Klarna" format next year with a higher number of episodes, featuring several moderators and perspectives. The decision to present the show with several heads was made after viewing the pilot episodes. It is unclear at this time who will be the new moderators for the continuation of the "Klarna" format show in the following year. The employees' internal statement was written before Easter 2025 and was not intended for publication. It is also important to note that no prior context was provided about the separation of the Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) from journalist Julia Ruhs. The NDR supports an "open discussion culture" and it remains to be seen how this controversy will unfold in the coming months.
