Technical Relief Agency Conducts Large-Scale Exercise in North Rhine-Westphalia
The Technical Relief Agency (THW) in North Rhine-Westphalia recently conducted a large-scale exercise at several locations, with the highlight being a significant event in Düsseldorf Rhine harbor.
During the exercise, the "Water Damage/Pumps" specialist groups faced a challenging scenario: managing the failure of pumps in a wastewater treatment plant. To address this issue, they installed pumps with a total capacity of 45,000 liters per minute.
In Düsseldorf Rhine harbor, an evacuation exercise was conducted using ten boats and two working platforms. This part of the exercise was a testament to the agency's readiness to respond effectively in emergency situations.
The THW electricians were also put to the test, restoring the energy supply in the event of far-reaching power outages. The "Power Supply" specialist group ensured the power supply for the deployed pumps.
The THW State Representative for NRW, Nicolas Hefner, commended the up-to-date know-how of the deployed forces. Dr. Daniela Lesmeister, the State Secretary in the Ministry of the Interior of North Rhine-Westphalia, also praised the commitment and professionalism of the deployed forces.
The THW Landesverband Nordrhein-Westfalen holds the leadership role for the FÜLEX 2025 exercises in North Rhine-Westphalia. These exercises, the largest civil protection training conducted by THW NRW, will involve over 3,500 personnel at multiple weekends starting from August 2025.
The leadership and coordination specialists supported the control and coordination of the FÜLEX exercise. The "Mobile Flood Level" team set up several flood measurement points, while the "Unmanned Aerial Systems" team practiced taking aerial photographs using drones in major damage events such as flood disasters.
More than half of the approximately 900 deployed forces practiced on or near the Rhine. The "Clearing" specialist group demonstrated their skills in dyke construction.
In the next two weekends (September 13 and 20, 2025), generalists from the "Rescue" and "Emergency Supply and Emergency Repair" groups will take the lead. The logistics units ensured the well-being of the participants, including meal preparation, supply of consumables, and equipment repair.
