Interior Minister assesses security measures in Dusseldorf's Historic district
In a significant visit to Düsseldorf, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser met with an SPD delegation to discuss security measures for New Year's Eve and the overall safety concept in the city's old town.
The meeting, which took place at the market place on Monday afternoon, was attended by MP Zanda Martens, SPD city councilor Martin Volkenrath, Adis Selimi (SPD Bundestag candidate for Düsseldorf South), and SPD mayoral candidate Fabian Zachel.
The discussion focused on concepts for security in Düsseldorf's old town, with the SPD proposing a multi-stage concept that includes a central, family-friendly offer and control points to prevent fireworks. This proposal comes after a ban on fireworks and firecrackers in the old town on New Year's Eve, but their use was still reported last year.
Martin Volkenrath, city councilor and part of the delegation, criticized the populist reporting on New Year's Eve, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach to security. He also highlighted that security in the old town has improved.
The "Safety in Düsseldorf's city center (SIDI)" project, led by street workers from the non-profit cooperative youth welfare organization (kohleG), was positively evaluated across party lines. Many places in the old town are already monitored by video cameras, and it was suggested that the lighting strength in the old town could be increased if necessary.
The police are on duty in the old town on weekends with four-person teams, and it is important to involve caterers and property owners in maintaining security. Knife fights are more common outside the old town, such as at Worringer Platz.
Nancy Faeser, during her tour, praised Düsseldorf's balanced security concept and emphasized the importance of immediate reaction to critical situations for effective security measures. However, she rejected a petition demanding a firecracker ban, stating that the majority of the population celebrates peacefully.
It is worth noting that an organization active in the "Safety in Düsseldorf's city center area" project and dealing with the critical group of young men frequently responsible for disturbances in the old town was not explicitly named during the visit. A gift package of mustard was presented to Nancy Faeser during the tour.
The visit was not for Mayor Keller, but for the SPD delegation, and it is hoped that these discussions will lead to a safer and more enjoyable New Year's Eve celebration in Düsseldorf's old town.
