Interior Minister: Abuse of demonstrations intolerable

In the wake of Middle Eastern tensions, German interior ministers are on high alert against unregulated pro-Palestinian protests, fearing the misuse of free speech to propagate hatred against Israel and Jews. At the Conference of Interior Ministers' opening, Berlin's Interior Senator, Iris Spranger (SPD), made a strong statement against this practice. The gathering saw the presence of Israeli Ambassador Ron Prosor and Central Council of Jews President, Josef Schuster.

The global terror threat landscape has changed, placing Germany in the crosshairs. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser highlighted two concerns at the conference. First, terrorism has been on the rise, necessitating heightened vigilance to safeguard German citizens. Second, she warned about the increasing Islamist terror threat, emphasizing the importance of closely monitoring and curbing Islamist threats, with a focus on critical locations like the Christmas markets and European Football Championship 2024.

Pro-Palestinian protests have drawn significant criticism, primarily for misusing the freedom of speech and assembly by spreading hatred and inciting unrest. Faeser strongly condemned this misuse, supporting the right to protest but not at the expense of promoting hatred or disturbance. Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) also urged for the continuation of the border checks initiated in October to combat the rise of criminal smuggling networks.

The German Football Association (DFB) is under scrutiny due to its influence in managing fan-related incidents. Several federal states have called for DFB's involvement in contributing to police operation costs. This follows discussions on addressing violent crime, sexualized depictions of violence against children via AI, and the reversal of the burden of proof in the confiscation of criminals' assets.
