Interactions Between New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Former President Donald Trump
In an unexpected turn of events, Governor Kathy Hochul of New York has been maintaining a regular dialogue with former President Donald Trump, a relationship that has significantly influenced the political landscape of the state.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation is currently reviewing a natural gas pipeline that was previously canceled during Trump's administration. This review comes after Governor Hochul resumed the state-backed construction of an offshore wind farm, a decision made following talks with President Trump.
The business community, too, has taken notice of this unique dynamic. Kathryn Wylde, CEO of the Partnership for New York City, finds Governor Hochul's dealmaking appealing to Trump. Wylde notes that it's easier for Hochul to negotiate with Trump since she isn't considered a presidential contender, like the governors of Illinois and California.
Democratic strategist Morgan Hook describes Hochul's approach as one that doesn't challenge Trump's authority, while also avoiding being perceived as a pushover. Former U.S. Rep. Tom Reynolds, a Republican from suburban Buffalo, echoes this sentiment, using the analogy 'Generals talk to generals' to describe the dynamic between Hochul and Trump.
However, this relationship isn't without its tensions. The relationship between President Trump and Governor Hochul is influenced by labor law conflicts, notably around a New York state labor law signed by Hochul to protect workers amid federal NLRB incapacity caused in part by Trump's January dismissal of a Democratic NLRB member, leading to lawsuits and political tension between state and federal authority.
Despite these disagreements, Governor Hochul has so far fought off Trump's efforts to kill the state's congestion pricing program. In fact, both Hochul and New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, whom Hochul endorsed in the Democratic primary, have stated they will confront President Trump's extreme agenda.
Interestingly, President Trump has endorsed Mamdani's rival for the mayoral race. Trump has attacked Mamdani's progressive politics, a stark contrast to his regular contact with Governor Hochul.
In a surprising twist, Governor Hochul has also cut a deal to let the federal government take over the reconstruction of Manhattan's Penn Station. This decision, while controversial, is a testament to the ongoing negotiations between the two leaders.
As President Trump threatens to send the National Guard to Chicago, the relationship between him and Governor Hochul continues to shape New York politics in unpredictable ways. The pragmatic approach taken by Governor Hochul in her dealings with Trump allows for the cutting of deals, a strategy that could prove beneficial for the state in the future.
