Interaction between New York Governor Kathy Hochul and President Trump and their rapport

In an unexpected turn of events, Governor Kathy Hochul of New York has been getting along remarkably well with President Donald Trump, a relationship that has caught the attention of many.

According to Kathryn Wylde, CEO of the Partnership for New York City, Governor Hochul's approach seems to be not challenging Trump's authority, an approach that apparently triggers a negative reaction from the President. This, Wylde suggests, might be one of the reasons for their amicable relationship.

The Governor's non-confrontational style appears to have paid off, as Trump has resumed the construction of an offshore wind farm after talks with Hochul. Moreover, he has backed down when she asked him not to send the National Guard to New York, a decision that was met with relief in the state.

Despite this, Hochul is not a pushover, as stated by Wylde. She has managed to convince Trump that she's not a threat or an enemy, a feat that is noteworthy given Trump's combative nature.

The Governor's dealmaking skills, Wylde claims, are appealing to Trump. This is evident in their negotiations over the reconstruction of Manhattan's Penn Station, where Hochul cut a deal to let the federal government take over the project.

However, the relationship between Hochul and Trump has not been without controversy. Governor Hochul endorsed state Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani for mayor of New York City, a move that was met with criticism from Trump. The President attacked Mamdani's progressive politics and found Hochul's endorsement 'a rather shocking development'.

Despite this, Hochul and Mamdani have been in regular contact, with the Governor supporting him in the New York City mayoral elections and highlighting their cooperation on police support and combating antisemitism. This unusual alliance, given their political differences and internal Democratic Party tensions against Trump, has been a remarkable aspect of their relationship.

Former U.S. Rep. Tom Reynolds, a Republican from suburban Buffalo, emphasized that Hochul and Trump's regular contact is significant, stating 'Generals talk to generals'.

Amidst the ongoing immigration crisis, immigration agents are swarming Chicago, while negotiations with President Trump continue regarding a natural gas pipeline that had previously been canceled. The state Department of Environmental Conservation is reviewing this pipeline, a move that could have significant implications for New York's energy sector.

In a New York Times guest essay, Hochul wrote that she and Mamdani will confront Trump's extreme agenda. Whether this means a continuation of the amicable relationship or a shift towards confrontation remains to be seen.

In the meantime, the unusual friendship between Hochul and Trump continues, a relationship that has defied political norms and has been a topic of discussion in political circles. Whether it will lead to significant policy changes or simply remain an anomaly in the world of politics, only time will tell.
