The Odra River floods: Głogów's race against time
Intensifying Flood Disaster as High Tide Hits Głogów
In the heart of Poland's battle against the tide
As the waters of the Odra River continue their relentless surge, the town of Głogów and its surroundings face a harrowing struggle to prevent widespread devastation. The floodwaters, currently at 685 centimeters, are testing the limits of the town's strained levees and pushing back against the barricades constructed to hold them back. With a critical 48-hour period ahead, authorities and emergency workers brace for a crucial test of Głogów's flood defenses.
Levees on the brink
The flood surge from the Odra River, originating in Lower Silesia, has been making its way towards Lubusz Voivodeship, threatening the town of Głogów. Rising water levels have reached a dangerous 685 cm at 17:00 on Sunday, with little room to spare. Głogów's mayor, Rafael Rokaszewicz, spoke to Polsat News reporter Katarzyna Janke, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. The Ostrów Tumski district, a critical location, is of particular concern, as emergency crews work tirelessly to patch up weakened sections of the levees. "We just had an operation to fix a leaking levee," explained Rokaszewicz. "The situation is dire."
Flood waves ahead
Peak flood waves on the Odra River are expected to pass through Głogów from Sunday night into the early hours of Monday. As water levels rapidly rise, reaching 654 cm currently and predicted to reach 7 meters, the levees, standing at 7.15-7.20 meters, are at risk of collapse. Surrounding rural municipalities, with kilometers of open levees, are in even more treacherous positions, with years of underinvestment leaving these flood defenses vulnerable.
We're all in this together
The local response to the flood crisis has been marked by coordinated efforts from various groups. Volunteers have been working side by side with the fire brigade, military personnel, and local residents, filling sandbags, reinforcing flood barriers, and helping to evacuate those most at risk. In Głogów, water is flooding the streets, and the drainage system is struggling to cope, putting additional strain on the town's flood pumps.
At a vulnerable point near Ostrów Tumski, firefighters have been working non-stop to pump out water from overflowing sewage systems. With floodwaters seeping into storm drains, the potential for further inundation looms large. The battle against the rising water has been described as a race against time, with the next two days set to be critical.
The backflow from Czarna River
Compounding the danger is the backflow from the Czarna River, another waterway that feeds into the Odra. Floodwaters from the Czarna River have already inundated several homes, particularly in the Nosocice district, where water levels have reached properties on Osadników Street. The situation on the Czarna River has become the most immediate concern for many residents, as water levels continue to rise from the backflow effect.
Looking forward
While the focus remains firmly on managing the crisis, local authorities are beginning to contemplate the long-term implications of the flood and what needs to be done to prevent future disasters. Mayor Rokaszewicz and other local leaders are discussing the critical state of Głogów's flood defenses and the need for substantial investment in levee reinforcement and flood infrastructure. "We have reached a point where emergency measures are no longer enough," stated Rokaszewicz. "These levees should have been upgraded years ago. Now, we are paying the price for those delays."
We're here for you
As the floodwaters slowly recede in the days to come, local authorities will assess the damage and determine the scale of recovery needed. In the meantime, the fight against the flood surge in Głogów is far from over. With lives and livelihoods at stake, the town and its residents stand united, battling the surging waters to protect their community.
