Intensifying Disagreement Between Governor Greg Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick

On a Sunday evening, out of the blue, Governor Greg Abbott vetoed SB 3—the THC ban bill in Texas. And on the very next day, Lt. Governor Dan Patrick lashed out, essentially branding Abbott a liar.

As a result, many republicans across the state are left curious about the true depth of the tension between Abbott and Patrick.

"I reckon there's probably. a bit of a rift on this issue," said Matt Mackowiak, a GOP consultant based in Austin, "But I suspect it ain't a broader rift. I see this as a temporary squabble, they'll either find a resolution in the special session, or we'll all shift focus and maybe this pops up again in two years. I don't foresee this turning into some major split that'll shape things in the future."

For the coming weeks, the spotlight shifts to Austin for the 'special session'. After this, most expect the 'rift' to fade away.

"I don't envision this simmering for long," Mackowiak told KTRH, "It may go on till July during the special session, but post that it'll either resolve itself or won't, and I reckon we'll all move on."
