Intensified Hurricane Erin Poses Surf Danger to East Coast Regions
Heavy rain is forecast for the Turks and Caicos and the eastern Bahamas through Tuesday, as Hurricane Erin, a Category 4 storm, continues its northwest trajectory. The hurricane, currently 140 miles north of Grand Turk Island, is expected to trace a shallow, C-shaped arc through the western Atlantic, potentially passing between North Carolina and Bermuda overnight Wednesday into Thursday.
According to Alex DaSilva, a weather expert working for AccuWeather Inc., the observed Tropical Wave is likely to contribute to dangerous surf, flooding, and beach and coastal damage in North Carolina. Flooding could begin as early as Tuesday, and coastal flooding and rip currents are also expected in several states, including New Jersey, Virginia, and Florida.
If Hurricane Erin holds to its forecast track, it will avoid a direct strike on any of the islands in the area or the US East Coast. However, Tropical storm warnings have been posted for the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas, and local officials have begun ordering tourists and residents to evacuate from some Outer Banks barrier islands in North Carolina.
Hurricane Erin's hurricane-strength winds stretch 80 miles from its centre, and its tropical-storm-strength winds reach out 230 miles. Waves may crest more than 20 feet on Long Island on Thursday and Friday.
Meanwhile, another tropical wave is moving off Africa into the Atlantic, which bears watching. The patch of thunderstorms and showers associated with the tropical wave is near Cabo Verde off the African coast, and it has a 60% chance of becoming a storm in the next week. The part of the ocean where the tropical wave is located is known as the main development region to forecasters and is particularly active between mid-August and late September.
Stay tuned for updates on Hurricane Erin's path and potential impact on the Caribbean and Eastern US.
