Intensified Campaign by British PAC Over Defaced Portrait; Mayor Supports Demands for Intervention
The Great British PAC is urging elected officials at all levels to intervene in the ongoing case of the vandalism of a historic portrait at Trinity College, Cambridge. The incident, which occurred on 8 March 2024, saw a member of Palestine Action, now a proscribed terrorist organisation, enter the college and slash a 1914 portrait by renowned artist Philip Alexius de László.
The PAC, a non-partisan group, has written letters to all Cambridgeshire MPs and county councillors, calling for political leaders to press the Police and Crime Commissioner to demand a full review of the investigation. They have also requested that the Constabulary reconsider their decision to close the case and support efforts towards public accountability and, if necessary, a private prosecution.
Jake Reed, one of the PAC directors, stated that the vandalism is not just about one painting but sends a message about acceptable behavior in a university setting. Jake Watts, another PAC director, added that the police not acting in the vandalism case indicates something has gone wrong.
Mayor Bristow of Cambridgeshire & Peterborough has expressed disbelief at the lack of police action in the case and has publicly backed the PAC's university leaders, Jake Reed and Jake Watts. He stated that if university officials and the police turn a blind eye to obvious criminality, they shouldn't be surprised if it encourages escalating examples of unacceptable behavior.
The PAC continues to call for transparency from both Trinity College and the Cambridgeshire police. They have previously raised alarm over the failure to prosecute those responsible for vandalizing a historic portrait of Lord Balfour. The PAC is actively exploring a private prosecution to hold those responsible for the vandalism accountable.
As the campaign for justice over this vandalism case continues to gain momentum, the PAC invites all elected officials to support their demand for answers and ensure that justice is served.
