The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Southern Germany, with severe thunderstorms expected to hit the regions of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria on Sunday evening. According to the DWD, these severe thunderstorms may pose a particular risk of heavy rain or large hail. The warning is valid from 7:20 pm to 11 pm. The weather situation is caused by a cold front of a low over the British Isles, moving eastwards over Germany by Monday evening. This front will displace the hot Mediterranean air with cooler North Atlantic air, leading to a sharp drop in temperatures. The severe thunderstorms predicted by the DWD on Sunday evening did not materialize in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg as initially anticipated. The shift in weather patterns associated with low pressure over the North Sea brought cooler, wetter air, resulting in only isolated strong thunderstorms rather than widespread severe storms. Despite the change, the current forecast for Monday morning in these states is cooler and wet weather with continuous rain, especially in southwestern Baden-Württemberg. The affected regions can expect a sharply cooler autumnal temperature pattern through midweek. The DWD warns of potential flooding of basements and streets due to heavy rain. There is also a risk of hail damage to buildings, cars, and agricultural crops. An extension or expansion of the warnings beyond 11 pm is possible, according to the DWD, as the thunderstorms are expected to gradually weaken overnight into Monday. The German Weather Service advises residents in the affected regions to stay informed and be prepared for potential severe weather consequences. It is recommended to secure outdoor items, move vehicles under cover, and avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.
