In the heart of western Mexico, the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area was hit by a severe storm on August 20, 2025. The deluge caused widespread traffic collapse, leaving streets submerged and turning them into raging rivers that swept away vehicles and paralyzed traffic throughout the city[1][2].

The storm's impact was particularly severe on key areas such as the Los Arcos del Milenio roundabout, the Mercado de Abastos (Market of Abundance), Plaza Las Torres, López Cotilla Street, Pedro Moreno, Jardines del Sol, Fraccionamiento Las Torres, and Bosques de la Victoria[1][2]. The flooding also affected Line 1 of the Light Rail Transit (LRT), suspending operations for about two hours as floodwaters rendered the tracks unusable[1].

The Macrobús on the Independencia Highway also halted operations during the flooding[1]. Rescue operations were conducted with firefighters, police, and local residents working together to save people trapped in submerged vehicles; at least two individuals were documented rescued from a submerged car[1][2].

The floodwater damaged around 150 market stalls at the Circunvalación Belisario Market, resulting in traders losing most of their goods[1]. Despite the significant material damage and transport disruptions, there were no reported casualties or injuries[1][2].

Further heavy rains were forecasted to continue in the area in the following days[2]. As drivers were forced to use the sidewalks due to the flooding on these streets, traffic chaos continued in several points where the roads remained flooded in Guadalajara[1][2].

Elsewhere, 50 people were evacuated due to a fire at the ISSSTE clinic in Culiacán, but no injuries were reported[3]. Road traffic between Bavispe and Bacerac in Sonora was also interrupted due to rain damage[4].

Despite the challenges, the resilience of the community shone through as firefighters, police, and residents worked together to ensure the safety of Guadalajara's citizens. The city will no doubt recover from this storm, but for now, the focus remains on managing the ongoing floodwaters and ensuring the safety of all.
