Heat, Hail, and Floods: Brace for Tumultuous Weekend Weather Across Germany

Severe Weather Alert: Prepare for Scorching Heat, Hailstorms, and Flooding Over the Weekend - Intense Weather Alert: Storm Hazards Predicted This Weekend: Hail, Heat, and Flood Possibilities
The forthcoming weekend is set to be anything but peaceful and relaxing, as per predictions by the German Weather Service (DWD). The weather agency forecasts a barrage of severe storms, heavy rain, localized flooding, and even hailstorms that could sweep the nation. "Anyone planning outdoor activities should reconsider," warns DWD meteorologist Thomas Schuster.
Additionally, there's an ominous forecast of hail, with the hailstones expected to fall within the "normal storm range" – that is, measures of three to four centimeters. This is slightly smaller than the hailstorms seen at the beginning of the month.
Saturday promises 35°C and high humidity
According to Schuster, there will be considerable precipitation on Saturday, and temperatures could soar up to 35 degrees Celsius. The atmosphere will be excessively humid and muggy. From the mountains, the first thunderstorms might form and sweep across the country, weakening as they progress.
A tropical night awaits Sunday in selected areas
By Sunday night, a warm front is expected to extend from Basel via Karlsruhe to Mannheim, according to Schuster. Elsewhere in Baden-Württemberg, temperatures are predicted to drop to 15 to 18 degrees. "That's already uncomfortable," Schuster remarks.
Sunday's forecast remains gloomy
A cold front is expected to push from northwest to southeast on Sunday, as per the expert's forecast. As of Friday afternoon, it is likely to happen in the first half of the day. The intensity of the thunderstorms is expected to diminish because the air won't heat up all day, according to a fellow DWD meteorologist.
Intense thunderstorm cells are possible, with rainfall of up to 40 liters per square meter in a short period of time. Such weather conditions could lead to such extremes. Moreover, a line of thunderstorms spanning up to 100 kilometers could materialize, accompanied by several lightning strikes. There is also the possibility of downbursts, where cold air drops during a thunderstorm, hits the ground, and spreads out in a linear direction, potentially reaching high wind speeds.
Although tornados are less likely due to a lack of moisture at ground level, a tornado was reported by the DWD at the beginning of June, which moved over Ulm-Donaustetten for over ten kilometers. This event resulted in damage such as roofs being torn off.
Flooding is the greatest concern
The primary danger this weekend stems from the heavy rainfall, as per Schuster's statement. Some models even suggest 60 liters of rainfall for Oberschwaben, roughly half the monthly average in one day. "That's a significant burden for the environment," he points out. Although there isn't a drought, the soil is dry. Local roads could become flooded, and flooding is possible.
Once the cold front moves over the country, the weather is expected to improve, as per the forecasts. A stable high pressure area is anticipated to establish itself next week, as Schuster reports. Initial temperatures will remain below 30°C. This threshold could be exceeded again near the Rhine by mid-week, according to a colleague.
