Maharashtra and Kerala Brace for Heavy Rainfall as Monsoon Arrives Early
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for several districts in Kerala and Maharashtra, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds over the next few days. These alerts have been issued following the early arrival of the Southwest Monsoon in Kerala on May 24.
In Maharashtra, the districts of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, situated in the Konkan region, are of particular concern. According to the IMD, these areas can expect widespread light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected in Konkan and Goa during the coming days.
Scientist Shubhangi A. Bhute of the IMD explains that the monsoon has been active in South India, and conditions are favorable for the first onset of monsoon rains in Maharashtra. Fishermen have been advised to avoid going to sea due to the rough conditions expected.
Several other districts in Kerala, including Kasaragod, Kannur, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad, are under orange alert for the next three days.
Delhi experienced heavy rainfall and thunderstorms late Sunday night, resulting in waterlogging in certain areas of the national capital and flight disruptions at Indira Gandhi International Airport. According to the IMD forecast, Delhi will have a partly cloudy sky with a chance of light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds on May 25.
Additionally, extremely heavy rain is expected on May 25 and 26 in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, according to the IMD bulletin. Rain is expected to continue in various states across India, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura until May 30. Assam and Meghalaya may see very heavy rainfall on May 29 and 30.
