Intense Warning Issued by Israel for Potential Intense Military Action in Gaza City, Encourages Residents to Evacuate Immediately
In the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, Gaza City has become the epicentre of intense military action. According to figures from the territory's health ministry, which the United Nations considers reliable, Israel's retaliatory campaign has tragically claimed at least 65,174 lives, the majority of whom are civilians.
The Israeli military has been targeting militants in Gaza City with tank fire, armed UAVs (drones), and air strikes, aiming to dismantle terrorist infrastructure and locate weapons in the area. This offensive, led by Israel Katz, the Israeli Defense Minister, has been described as unprecedented in its force.
Amidst the chaos, the Israeli military has urged Palestinians to head to a "humanitarian area" in Al-Mawasi on the coast. However, many Palestinians find the journey to flee Gaza City prohibitively expensive, and they are unsure of their destination.
The United Nations estimates that about one million people were living in Gaza City and its surroundings at the end of August. Since late August, an estimated 480,000 people have fled, according to military estimates, while the Gaza's civil defence agency estimates 450,000 people have fled.
The assault comes ahead of a planned move by several Western governments to recognise a Palestinian state at a UN summit next week. However, the US-backed offensive on Gaza City has also sparked controversy, with a UN probe recently accusing Israel of committing "genocide" in the Gaza Strip.
The situation on the ground is dire. Mona Abdel Karim, a displaced Palestinian in western Gaza City, has been unable to secure transport south and has been sleeping on Al-Rashid road for two nights with her family. Her youngest son has cried from fatigue during their journey.
Khaled al-Majdalawi, another displaced Palestinian in western Gaza City, has been trying to evacuate to the south but has not been able to find any means of transport. Mona Abdel Karim's family has been taking turns dragging a small cart with some of their belongings as they walk more than 15 kilometers (nine miles) and crawl from exhaustion.
Civil defense agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal reported "artillery shelling and intermittent gunfire" in the southwestern Tel al-Hawa neighborhood of Gaza City. He also reported shelling and drone fire in northwestern areas of the city, and strikes in several neighborhoods.
The Israeli military launched its ground assault on Gaza City on Tuesday, and the city continues to face intense bombardment. The situation remains volatile, and the future for many displaced Palestinians remains uncertain.
