Intense UTMB Chianti Race: Walmsley Sprints to Victory in 10 Hours, Jornet and Bouillard Secure Qualification, Pascall Dominates Women's Category

Jim Walmsley Sheds UTMB Demons, Cements Trail Running Legacy

Jim Walmsley stamped his authority on the trail running world by claiming a stunning victory at the UTMB Chianti 120k race, blazing through the course in a scorching 9 hours and 59 minutes. The 33-year-old American, still glowing at the finish line, avenged his disappointing DNF in the 2021 UTMB finals in emphatic style.

"Man, this race was a beast," admits Walmsley, "Muddy as hell, but totally worth it." His average pace of 12 km/h (7.4 mph) didn't even seem to tire him out, turning in an outstanding performance. The former Harvard University runner has been preparing for this event in recent weeks, and his hard work showed.

"Yes, it was tough, but it was incredibly rewarding," Walmsley adds. Three-time UTMB champion Kilian Jornet and French runner Vincent Bouillard tried to keep up, but Walmsley gradually distanced himself from the pack on a crucial descent, leaving them trailing in his wake.

Jornet and Bouillard sparred for second place, with Jornet ultimately securing a 28-minute advantage over Bouillard. The pair have indeed clinched their spots for the esteemed Western States 100-Miler, a challenge that Bouillard confesses will take him out of his comfort zone.

Jornet's race was hampered by Tibial Fascia pain for over half the race, while Bouillard grappled with GI issues. Despite the hurdles, both runners expressed pride in competing against trail running legends.

"The competition was fierce, and it's amazing to race alongside such extraordinary individuals," Bouillard confesses.

Despitet the fierce competition, the camaraderie among trail runners was evident. "It was fantastic to win with Jim putting on a masterclass in trail running," Jornet acknowledges.

In the women's race, Britain's Fiona Pascall claimed the top spot in 12 hours, 34 minutes and 59 seconds, securing her ticket to the Western States 100-Miler. This could mark an historic moment, following in the footsteps of her sister Beth, who won the race last year.

Johanna Antila of Finland and Spain's Azara Garcia de los Salmones completed the podium. However, stalwarts such as Abby Hall and Fabiola Conti struggled due to misadventures.

Trail Shoe Recommendations for Ultra Runners

When it comes to ultra marathons on rugged terrain, the right pair of trail shoes can make all the difference. Here are some top recommendations:

Saucony Xodus Ultra 2

  • Strengths: Agile design, protective toe box, and versatile multi-directional lugs provide excellent grip on both wet and dry surfaces. The generous cushioning with PWRRUN PB foam ensures comfort even on long distances.
  • Weaknesses: A narrow toe box that may not accommodate wide feet, some reports of weak spots in the upper.
  • Terrain Suitability: Excellent traction makes it suitable for various terrain conditions.

Salomon Speedcross Series

  • Not specifically mentioned in the search results, but renowned for its aggressive lugs and exceptional grip on wet and muddy trails, making it ideal for technical and challenging courses.

Altra Olympus 6

  • Pros: Exceptional cushioning, spacious toe box, and durable construction. Excels on loose or wet surfaces thanks to its grippy Vibram Megagrip outsole.
  • Cons: Relatively heavy weight, lacks energy return, and slightly higher price tag compared to alternatives.
  • Terrain Suitability: Perfect for challenging, uneven terrain due to its deep lugs and premium traction capabilities.

Hoka Speedgoat Series

  • Known for cushioning and stability, Hoka shoes are a popular choice for long-distance trail runners. They are often recommended for ultra marathons due to their performance and comfort.

For the UTMB Chianti 120k, shoes with aggressive lugs and good traction, such as the Salomon Speedcross or Saucony Xodus Ultra 2, would be ideal. The Altra Olympus 6 is also a strong contender thanks to its durability and traction capabilities, despite its weight.

"Jim Walmsley's stunning victory at the UTMB Chianti 120k race showcased his dominance in the trail running world, with his agile footwear potentially playing a significant role in his success."

"Contenders for the Western States 100-Miler, such as Vincent Bouillard, may find the aggressive lugs and excellent grip of the Salomon Speedcross Series beneficial for navigating challenging courses they'll face in their comfort zones."
