Intense typhoons forming in the Pacific Ocean, anticipated to bring weekend precipitation to South Korea.
Typhoons Ragasa, Mitag, and Neoguri Affect South Korea and Surrounding Regions
South Korea is bracing for a weekend of rain as three typhoons - Ragasa, Mitag, and Neoguri - make their way through the Northwest Pacific.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), Typhoon Ragasa has intensified into a Category 3 storm with maximum sustained winds of 178 to 208 kilometers per hour. The typhoon is expected to most strongly affect the southern and eastern parts of Taiwan, with heavy rain, strong winds, and high waves anticipated in these regions.
The eastern coastal areas in Gangwon Province are expected to see rainfall until Sunday morning, with localized downpours ranging between 20 to 30 millimeters per hour nationwide on Saturday. Hourly rainfall ranging between 30 mm to 50 mm is expected in South Chungcheong Province and western parts of North Jeolla Province on Saturday.
While the chances for Typhoon Ragasa to shift its projected path and move toward the Korean Peninsula are small, according to the KMA, Typhoon Mitag is expected to weaken into a low-pressure trough by Saturday, and Typhoon Neoguri is expected to move out into the ocean from Sunday.
Typhoon Neoguri is currently moving towards the eastern coast of Japan, but none of the three typhoons are currently forecast to directly impact the Korean Peninsula. The KMA is keeping a close watch on the possibility of additional typhoons forming in the future.
High sea temperatures surrounding Korea create favorable conditions for the formation of tropical disturbances, and the KMA predicts that the paths and intensity of the typhoons could shift.
Rain is forecast nationwide from Friday night through Saturday in Korea, and the eastern coastal areas in Gangwon Province are expected to see rainfall until Sunday morning. The Korea Meteorological Administration advises residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions as the situation develops.
