Gear up for some wild weather, folks! The German Weather Service (DWD) is warning of severe turbulence in the south and east of the country on Sunday afternoon. Buckle up for the potential of heavy rain, hail, and gusts of wind up to 100 km/h[1]. In select areas, hailstones as big as 3 cm in diameter are predicted, and flash flooding could dump up to 40L per square meter in a short time, or over 60L in a few hours[1].
The stormy weather has already caused a ruckus over the weekend, with Saturday and overnight Sunday seeing strong thunderstorms in parts of Germany. Paderborn, North Rhine-Westphalia, took a direct hit, leaving emergency services scrambling to handle flooded basements and dealing with the partial collapse of a production hall's roof[1]. The Paderborn hospital was thrown into disarray as well, with water entering the building and disrupting elevator services[1].
When night fell, the police in Paderborn fielded over 400 emergency calls between 7 pm and 10 pm on Saturday[1]. It's no wonder - parts of the city looked like a river had decided to flood the streets!
But the weekend's stormy spectacle isn't over just yet. Meteorologists suspect a possible tornado in Altenbeken near Paderborn, based on eyewitness accounts and images of a funnel cloud under a thundercloud[2]. The German Weather Service will investigate the matter further in the coming days[2].
In other stormy news, detours and blocked traffic routes were a reality in Detmold, Bielefeld, and several other cities due to fallen trees[1]. In Gymnich, the Rhein-Erft district, a house fire broke out after a lightning strike[1].
It's a stormy week ahead, but fear not - the severity should start to dip come Monday, with scattered showers expected in the east and southeast and some sunshine peeking through in the southwest and along the North Sea[1]. Temperatures should reach between 20 to 26°C[1].
Now, don't go thinking that mother nature is planning to show us a little mercy just yet. Tornado-like conditions or not, the weather over the past weekend was no joke, and it goes to show just how important it is to stay informed and prepared for whatever the skies might bring.
