updated News Flash: Monday, April 28

Galicia faces orange alerts as Storm Ivo lashes the region with wind gusts of up to 100 km/h and 7-meter high waves on the coast. A Coruña and Pontevedra are under threat, followed closely by the hard-hit Viveiro, where gusts have exceeded the 100 km/h forecast.

In addition to the wind, Galicia has an active yellow alert for hail and rain of up to 15 liters per square meter in an hour. The rain has already caused a stir in Santa Comba, accumulating 45.3 liters per square meter, and Rianxo, with a whopping 40.1 liters per square meter in recent hours.

To add to the turmoil, Viveiro and Cedeira have seen gusts of 137.5 km/h and 129.3 km/h, respectively, in the past few days, while high-altitude stations recorded gusts of up to 157 km/h in Carballeda de Valdeorras.

The Xunta has suspended all federated sports activities and the Xogade program in Lugo's A Marinha area due to the strong winds. As of now, 53 incidents have been reported by the 112 Galicia emergency services, primarily involving fallen trees and branches causing road disruptions.

History suggests that Galicia has faced a series of storms in April this year. Storm Nuria and the Easter Storm wreaked havoc across the region, with high winds and heavy rainfall causing disruptions in schools, transportation, and flooding in certain areas. The new Storm Ivo is only adding fuel to the fire.

In 2025, weather-forecasting in regions like Valdeorras might need to account for increasingly intense weather scenarios, such as the recent Storm Ivo, which brought gusts exceeding 100 km/h. The accumulations of rain in certain areas, like Rianxo and Santa Comba, have already reached significant levels. These weather events have also affected sports activities, forcing the suspension of federated sports in Lugo's A Marinha area. Despite the challenges, the resilience of Galicia in facing such storms, as seen with Storm Nuria and the Easter Storm, remains evident.

Strong winds and multiple incidents hit Galicia due to Storm Ivo, with gusts reaching 166 km/h. Also, there's a warning of more storms, heavy rain, and snowfall in the Lugo mountains.
