Russia's vow of revenge against Ukraine seems to have taken a grim turn last night. Multiple casualties and injuries have been reported in Kyiv, with other cities in western Ukraine also experiencing explosions. The "Kyiv Independent" reports four deaths and 20 injuries in the capital, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Air alerts were sounded in all regions of Ukraine.

An intense wave of drone attacks and cruise missiles rained down on Ukraine last night, according to various news portals. Kyiv, along with several major cities and regions in western Ukraine, became the target of these attacks. The Ukrainian air force warned that several Russian bombers had taken off and were likely to have launched cruise missiles. While the reports cannot be independently verified, explosions were confirmed in several cities.

Several fires broke out in residential buildings in Kyiv, with other civilian infrastructure also ablaze. Falling debris was reported in several districts. In addition, attacks hit the western Ukrainian city of Luzk and the region of Ternopil, with Mayor Ihor Polischchuk reporting five injuries in Luzk. Buildings and cars in Chmelnytskyi were also damaged.

The intensiveness of these air attacks on Ukraine's western regions marked the most extreme attack so far, according to Vyacheslav Negoda, head of the military administration of Ternopil. Emergency services were deployed to assess the damage.

Reports suggest this massive retaliation could be Russia's large-scale response to Ukraine's preemptive strikes on Russia's bomber fleet last weekend. Ukraine's SBU intelligence service executed a far-reaching operation that destroyed more than 40 bombers, worth a total of seven billion dollars, according to the Ukrainian military[5]. However, the exact number of destroyed bombers remains unconfirmed.

In response, Russia described the attacks as a terrorist act and only acknowledged damage to a few aircraft in Murmansk and Irkutsk[4]. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov indirectly threatened retaliation for the strikes on the bomber fleet, stating that Russia's response would come at a time and with means that "our military deems necessary."
