Intense rainstorms sweep through Beijing and neighboring provinces in China, resulting in the tragic loss of 53 lives.
In the heart of July 2025, relentless rainstorms have battered northern China, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. The death toll from these floods currently stands at around 37 confirmed deaths, with the majority of casualties reported in the Beijing area.
The Miyun District, northeast of Beijing, has suffered the highest death toll, with 31 people perishing at a nursing home overwhelmed by flash floods. Other affected regions include Yanqing District and neighbouring provinces. Inner Mongolia, Jilin, Shandong, Hunan, and Hebei have also reported significant damage, with at least 13 lives lost in northwest China due to floods and mudslides.
Entire villages have been relocated in towns like Shicheng, and emergency shelters have been set up to accommodate displaced residents. Over 10,000 residents in Miyun alone were left without electricity, and more than 4,400 people were evacuated after torrents flooded entire villages.
The deluge has caused 41 rivers across the country to overflow, including the Miyun Reservoir near Beijing. State broadcaster CCTV reported widespread power outages, collapsed roads, and damage to critical infrastructure.
Scientists have linked the intensifying rainfall in China's typically arid north to climate change and the East Asian monsoon. The ongoing flooding raises concerns about long-term vulnerability in densely populated regions.
Efforts to manage the situation include rescue and relief operations, deployment of emergency services, monitoring and forecasting by meteorological agencies, and coordinated disaster response and rehabilitation efforts by local and national authorities.
