Intense rainstorms forecasted for soaked southern areas
Heavy Rain Alert for Central and Southern South Korea
South Korea is bracing for heavy rainfall from Wednesday to Thursday, with central and southern regions expected to bear the brunt of the downpour. The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has warned of another round of extreme, localized torrential rainfall, due to the clash of cool, dry air from the northwest moving southward and hot and humid air from the south.
According to the KMA, the Greater Seoul region, Incheon, Gyeonggi Province, inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon Province, the North and South Chungcheong provinces, and North Jeolla Province could see accumulated rainfall of 30 to 80 millimeters. Central areas such as Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do provinces are predicted to receive more than 120 millimeters, while Chungcheong-do provinces may receive over 100 millimeters. The Seoul metropolitan area is expected to get between 30 and 80 millimeters of rain.
The heavy rainfall is associated with the combined influence of a low vortex and monsoon systems. Significant rain is forecast to start from Wednesday daytime, with temperatures around 27°C in Seoul and Busan, and highs near 28°C. Rain is expected to mostly stop by Thursday morning. Tropical nights will ease starting Friday.
The heavy rain raises concerns about possible secondary disasters such as floods, landslides, mudslides, and urban waterlogging. Regions particularly affected include central areas such as Gyeonggi-do, Gangwon-do, Chungcheong-do provinces, the Seoul metropolitan area, and southern areas including parts of South Jeolla Province and Jeju Island.
On Sunday and Monday morning, Korea's southern region saw accumulated rainfall exceed 190 millimeters. As of Monday, Muan, South Jeolla Province, had seen 289.6 millimeters of rainfall, while Gwangju received 197.9 millimeters. Hapcheon, South Gyeongsang Province, recorded 212.7 millimeters of rainfall.
Warm air from the south is also flowing into the Korean Peninsula. Despite the heavy rain, heat wave watches are expected to remain. The atmosphere is expected to become increasingly unstable as the hot and humid air from the south continues to push northward.
Precautions are advised due to potential flooding and other rain-related hazards during this period. Stay tuned for further updates from the Korea Meteorological Administration.
