India Braces for Intense Rainfall and Cooler Weather in Early August
Multiple weather systems are set to bring intense rainfall to various parts of India over the next few days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
In the northwest, a cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan and a western disturbance over Punjab are expected to bring heavy rainfall. East Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh have already reported extremely heavy rainfall, and more is expected in these regions from July 31 to August 1.
Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) will experience a maximum temperature of 33-35°C with southeasterly winds of less than 15 kmph on August 1, and 33-35°C with winds of 8-10 kmph on August 2. Light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and cooler-than-usual temperatures are predicted in the region from July 30 to August 2.
In the northeast, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to continue over the next seven days, with extremely heavy rainfall over Assam and Meghalaya on August 2. Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and West Uttar Pradesh will experience heavy to very heavy rainfall from July 31 to August 5.
The southern states of Tamil Nadu will experience isolated heavy rainfall from August 2 to 5, with strong surface winds reaching 40-50 kmph over the next five days. South Interior Karnataka will experience heavy rainfall on July 30, while Kerala & Mahe, coastal AP, and Telangana will experience light to moderate rain and strong winds for the next seven days.
Isolated heavy rainfall is also predicted in Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal on various dates. The northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya will experience thunderstorms and very heavy rainfall from July 30 to August 5.
The IMD has issued a nationwide weather alert due to these strong monsoon systems. Several eastern and central states are under alert with a possibility of extremely heavy rainfall over West Madhya Pradesh on July 31.
The IMD advises people to stay alert, especially in flood-prone and hilly areas, and to follow local advisories during heavy rain. The department is continuously monitoring the situation and issuing timely updates to ensure public safety. People are also advised to take precautions to protect crops and property during the rainy period.
For August and September overall, the IMD projects above-normal rainfall for the country as a whole, with cumulative rainfall expected to be above 106% of the long period average. However, some parts of central India, including Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Kerala, may experience below-normal rainfall during August.
