Heavy rainfall is set to impact several regions across India over the next few days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The forecast suggests that Central, East, and parts of North India will experience heavy to very heavy rain, posing potential risks of flooding and landslides.
In East India, including Bihar, Odisha, and Gangetic West Bengal, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely. Bihar is expected to experience thunderstorms and very heavy rain on June 22–23, while Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal can expect heavy spells from June 22–26. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim will get heavy showers on June 21–22.
Central India, specifically Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand, are also under the heavy rainfall alert. Madhya Pradesh will see heavy to very heavy rainfall daily, with extremely heavy rain predicted on June 23. Chhattisgarh is forecast intermittent heavy rainfall on June 21 and again June 24–26. Jharkhand also will have intermittent heavy rain.
North India, including Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Punjab, have already experienced showers with thunderstorms, wind gusts, and very heavy rainfall around June 21-22. The monsoon is advancing into Punjab and nearby regions in the coming days. East and West Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand can expect very heavy rain on July 1. West UP will experience very heavy rain on July 1.
Northeast India, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, have seen intense downpours, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. However, July is expected to bring below-normal rainfall in most parts of Northeast India, though actual rainfall may be above normal in some pockets.
Gangetic West Bengal and Bihar are also expected to see heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coming days.
Coastal Maharashtra, Goa, and Gujarat are likely to continue experiencing rainfall, with Gujarat included among states with heavy to very heavy rain alerts. Flash flooding and waterlogging are possible in low-lying areas in coastal Maharashtra, Goa, and Gujarat.
Kerala and Mahe will experience heavy rain from July 2 to 4, while Coastal Karnataka will have rainfall for the entire week. However, parts of extreme South Peninsular India are likely to receive below-normal rainfall in July, but some localized areas may see above-normal rain. Kerala and Coastal Karnataka may have below-normal rainfall overall.
Thunderstorms and lightning are expected across the Northeastern region. Residents in Delhi are advised to carry umbrellas and plan commutes to avoid traffic disruptions due to rain, as the capital is expected to experience cooler-than-usual weather with cloud cover and intermittent rains.
Strong winds reaching 40-50 kmph are expected across South Peninsular India during the week. Southern states like Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Coastal Karnataka will receive moderate rainfall with heavy rain at isolated places.
The IMD forecasts that overall July 2025 rainfall will be above normal, exceeding 106% of the Long Period Average, benefiting agriculture but also posing risks of flooding and landslides. However, Northeast, East India, and some parts of South Peninsular India are expected to receive below-normal rainfall, though with possible variations.
In East India, particularly Bihar, the weather forecast predicts thunderstorms and very heavy rainfall on June 22-23.
Central India, such as Madhya Pradesh, also has a weather-forecasting alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy rain expected on June 23.
